A "Thuru Kapakaru" tree planting program was implemented on 10.10.2024 at Anuradhapura Sidhdhartha Vidyalaya in conjunction with the "Akurata Atwelak" project organized by the Department of Sociology of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences of the University of Sri Jayewardenepura for the third consecutive time. To mark World Water Day and World Forest Day, a Thuru Kepakaru tree planting programme was held on 22nd of March 2024, with the support of Forest Conservation Department and Kantale Irrigation Engineering Office at Kanthale Dam. In collaboration with Studenst of University of Kelaniya and Rajarata, Thuru Kepakaru programme was able to conduct another tree planting programme on 19th of December 2023, where 130 tree saplings were planted at Aththadassi Vidyalaya and Akmeemana Vidyalaya in Galle.

To mark World Environment Day and to safeguard the planet for future generations, a Turukepakaru tree planting program was held today with the Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association at Viharamaha Devi Park in Colombo. Capital Maharaja Groups Group Director and Chief Operating Officer Mr. S.C. Weerasekara, Mr. Chamara Lokupothagamage and CEO of Kansai Paints Lanka participated. The Girl Guide Association was represented by Chief Commisioner Mrs.Sulari Jayawardena, Prarthana Liyanage,Vice-Chair of the AP Regional Committee, Treasurer Mrs.Tamara Wijesinghe and International Commissioner Mrs. Nadeeka Gunesekara. Representing the Environmental Authority was Media Officer, Mrs. Sriyanjani Lokuliyana. Certificates and Gifts were distributed to children who had been taking their plants over the last year.

A chapter of the "Thurukepakaru" tree planting program took place this morning at the Dudley Senanayake Vidyalaya in Park road, Colombo. This was supported by Gammadda and Slon. The event was graced by the presence of the Senior Human Rights Advisor to the OHCR Mr. Juan Fernandez, Chief Operating Officer of the Capital Maharaja Group Mr. S. C. Weerasekara and Executive Group Director of the Capital Maharaja Group Mr. Suranga Jayalath as well as the Principal of the school Venerable Ulapane Sumangala Himi. Teachers, parents and children all came together with this programme. A plant was also symbolically planted by Mr. Fernandez in lieu of the International Human rights Day which falls on the 10th of December this year commemorating the 74th anniversary of the UDHR.

This project was carried out along side the Sinhala and Tamil News year customs, where many individuals, V-Force members from all 25 districts joined in the tree planting initiative, simultaneously coordinated to fall in line with the auspicious time of 11.16am.

Name : Husma Podata Tharuna Saviyak - Phase II

The Kandy Saviya Youth Group engaged in planting 120 trees on the 20th September (Binara Fullmoon Poya day) in several locations in the Kandy district. This took place as the second phase of the Husma Podata Tharuna Saviyak Tree Planting campaign. This continues to happen as a project to motivate youngsters to involve in growing trees with much value. These trees were uploaded to the Thuru Kepakaru app as well. We are hoping to carry out the next phase of this campaign in the Kurunagala district.

Name : Ropana Pooja

S-Lon together with Thuru Kepakaru, an initiative by Gammadda V-Force, once again has planned a tree planting project, a concept carried out in sacred sites varying from temples to churches to kovils and mosques around Sri Lanka. The project aims to contribute towards the growth of environmental development in Sri Lanka. Further, to cater to the present extent under mango in Sri Lanka which is about 27,500 Ac. Predominantly, grown in areas such as Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, Hambanthota, Puttalam, Moneragala, Jaffna districts and in Mahaweli Systems H & C. What makes this tree planting project significant is that we will be allocating a specific owner for each tree which will be planted in the selected list of sacred sites. The relevant religious leader of the specific sacred site will be responsible for the tree planted. As each tree will be given a unique QR code, they are responsible for following and monitoring the growth of the plant and updating the information on the Thuru Kepakaru app accordingly. The selected type of tree is Mango(Amba), the reason being, Mango trees are well adapted to tropical and subtropical environmental conditions. There is a wide range of mango presently grown in Sri Lanka. Therefore, consulting the Department of agriculture, we have come to terms that the below mentioned rare type of mango trees will be used for this project. They are Mee Amba, Wal Amba, Gira Amba, Betti Amba, Atamba. These trees have been choses taking into consideration the fact that they are a rare and decaying set of mango trees presently existing in Sri Lanka. Further, keeping in mind the climate requirements, condition of soil/ space, health and other benefits gained from them. The total number of mango trees we intend to plant at this project is 7000.

Name : Husma Podata Tharuna Saviyak!

In parallel to the Thuru Kepakaru program, the Saviya Youth Organization has decided to plant Mango Plants and certain other plants. A campeign Husma Podata Tharuna Saviyak to grow a plant with much value. A number of 166 plants have been uploaded to the Thuru Kepakaru App and another 200 plants are yet to be planted in the Kalutara District. Further, Another 200 plants in the Badulla District. Covering the 25 Districts in Sri Lanka we have made arrangements to plant a number of 1000 plants in total. 1000 young individuals will join hands with the Thuru Kepakaru for this campaign. Currently the following areas have contributed to this project as follows. Anuradhapura - 77 Chilaw - 30 Kandy-29 Matara-10 Hatton-10 This project is currently underway.

Name : Islandwide Tree Palnting Project

A tree planting project supported by the Sri Lanka Scouts Association and Gammadda V-Force together with the News 1st team, joined by the Central Environment Authority, Thuru Kapakaru, a concept carried out island wide to plant a total of 25,000 plants, covering the 25 districts around Sri Lanka. Mainly focusing on 1 main location and 3 selected sub locations in each district. Based on the theme Athulathin Hoda Wemu, the project aimed to contribute towards the environmental development in Sri Lanka. Planting of 1,000 Plants per district, the aim was to make sure that each plant has its designated owner, a scout from the relevant area. He or she is responsible for the tree/trees they plant, and they must follow the growth of the plant and keep updating the app. This project was conducted from March 26th to April 10th 2021 (16 days). The relevant scouts chosen for this project from the areas, were provided with plant saplings indigenous to the relevant location in each district. The owner/scout of each plant was issued a certificate of recognition. Each plant had a unique QR code. This QR code was be pre-issued. The owner/ scout was requested to sign in to the Thuru Kapakaru app, by scanning the unique QR code of the plant and maintain the profile created specifically for the plant. They must constantly update the growth of the plant and report its progress accordingly.

Name : Tree Planting Project - Akurassa, Ihala Maliduwa

Taking into account the environmental factors in Sri Lanka, Gammadda V-Force has been caring out many projects throughout the years. Haritha Ralla or Green Wave was one of such projects which paved the way for V-Force to plant more than 10,000 plants all over Sri Lanka including Ella, Kalu Ganga and Diyathalawa Foxhill. A 1000 Kumbuk tree planting project was carried out on the 22nd January 2021 in Matara District Akurassa Divisional Secratariet. A water catchment area where the Gal Anihena River begins, and more than 500 people in Ihala Maliduwa Village as well as surrounding villages receive water. The goal was to protect the catchment area and purify the water using the natural filtration properties of the Kumbuk trees. About 30 students from the University of Ruhuna Carrier guidance unit, and the V-Force team based in Akurassa were able to directly participate. They all owned 1 tree each at this project. Further, the participation of many government agencies including the Akuressa Divisional Secretariat and the Department of Forest Conservation, members of the Upper Maliduwa Community Water Project and their families came forward to take care of the seedlings. This project came into place with the help of the Divisional secretariat, S-lon and the V-Force team, the project planners who were able to select a most suitable location which is a water catchment area in the Ihala Maliduwa Village in order to conduct this project. Under the observation of the Forest Department, it was decided to plant Kumbuk, Mee and Hora in this selected area. Taking into consideration that the following trees are endemic to Sri Lanka as well as native trees that are listed as endangered.

Name : Tree-planting Kalu Ganga - Phase 2

The second tree-planting campaign beside the Kalu ganga river banks. It was held in December 2019. The campaign was sponsored by MAS Intimates, Mas Holdings and supported by a large number of university students from various universities, as well as members of the public and area residents. 4000 tree saplings were planted beside the river banks of Kalu ganga.

Name : Foxhill Tree Palning Project

Located in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, Diyatalawa is popularly known for its water bodies. Within the serenity of this area is the Foxhill nature reserve which is enriched with a variety of flora. This nature reserve which is blessed with a bounty of natural resources provides tranquility not only to Sri Lanka but to the entire world as a whole. The Gammadda V-Force team was able to conduct a tree-planting project which saw 2000 tree saplings being planted in this nature reserve.

At a time where marvels of nature such as the Ella forest reserve which attracts a large number of tourists and had garnered the attention of the globe, was burnt due to the recent wildfires and was left neglected without any authority taking action to prevent it. Gammadda V Force joined with the Sri Lanka Army and with several other Environmental Organizations in Sri Lanka, marking the first step of preventing such disasters and to preserve these natural resources by launching a tree planting program in the destroyed areas of the Ella Forest Reserve. Many varieties of plants such as Runa, Sapu, Kudu-Dawula, Sudu-Handun, Gammalu, Nelli, and Pihimbiya were taken to the mountains in large numbers to be planted in a 10 acre damaged area in Kithul Ella of the Ella Forest Reserve.

Name : Kalu Ganga River Banks phase - 1

The project was a tree-planting campaign beside the Kalu ganga river banks. It was held on Saturday, 29th September 2018. The campaign was sponsored by Brandix Lanka Limited and supported by a large number of university students from various universities, as well as members of the public, and area residents. 4000 tree saplings were planted beside the river banks of Kalu ganga.
